Keystone Press Awards 2018: First place, news consumer beat

Connecting agriculture to consumers

Reporter Lisa Scheid connects market trends and policy to agriculture, showing readers how it effects what we consume.

She’s traveled to across the region and to the state capitol to describe the forces shaping our agricultural economy in stories such as one about how bad weather ruined the state’s apple harvest and killed its marketing board or how Muslims were saving the lamb and goat markets.

Lisa wrote about food subscription services shaking up farmers markets and what that meant to consumers who loved local food. She also looked at how consumers’ quest for healthy food created a niche duck egg market.

Taking readers inside a licensed medical marijuana facility in New York, she wrote about the economic risks involved with growing the plant newly approved for sale in Pennsylvania.

Lisa analyzed the local impact of the trend toward plant-based milks in context with the larger struggles of the dairy industry. The story was accompanied by a video she produced comparing the flavor of plant and dairy milks.

Decisions have impact. It’s up to us to show consumers why it matters.
